In an attempt to prove how normal her family is and how well her children are doing despite her ex Jon Gosselin's recent admission that reality television gave their kids "developmental issues," Kate Gosselin paraded her 13-year-old twins Cara and Mady onto Thursday's Today show for an interview with Savannah Guthrie. Instead the stunt proved that she won't be able to hide her kids' true feelings forever.

What went down

Kate was all smiles as she sat flanked by her two elder daughters. But when Savannah asked Mady what she would like to say about how she and her family are doing, she was met with a few awkward umms. And not much else. Instead of reassuring the girls that they were in a safe place to share their feelings, Kate immediately jumped in with, "Mady, your words!" (along with an audible hand clapping) followed by, "It's your chance. Spit it out." It was demeaning and forceful and it seemed indicative of the exact opposite of what she was there to prove — that her family is OK.

Savannah tried to come to Mady's aid saying, "It's a hard question," to which Kate stiffly quipped, "Oh?" Savannah then prompted Cara who didn't respond at all. To me, her expression seemed a mix of terror and sadness.

Kate went on to say that she didn't want to speak for them but of course she proceeded to do so when she tried (and failed) again to prompt her daughter to say "sort of the things you said in the magazine... that years later they're good, they're fine. Go for it, Mads. It's your chance."

Mady responded to her mother, "No, you just said it."

Savannah tried again to get Cara to open up, which made the girls lighten up and laugh a little. But Cara still stayed mum regarding Savannah's question of whether they think people have the wrong idea of them. When Mady finally got the courage to speak, she only got a sentence or two out before Kate jumped in and started speaking over her despite the fact that she previously told Mady it was her chance to say what she wanted to say.

Interestingly, the girls both perked up when Savannah asked if they would want to do another TV show — and they both said yes! At the tail-end of the interview Mady warmed up and joked slightly with her mom to bump up the praise she was giving her girls. But overall it was just painful to watch.

The reality

They've grown up surrounded by camera crews and paparazzi their whole lives. Don't you think they would be used to this?

If Kate was trying to do some sort of damage control to prove that her family is a-OK, it backfired in a bad way. Anyone watching could clearly see the tension between the girls and their mother. After the show, she used the excuse that live television caught the girls off-guard, causing them to clam up. But that's a tough pill for me to swallow considering they've grown up surrounded by camera crews and paparazzi their whole lives. Don't you think they would be used to this?

Now, of course, rumors are swirling that Kate gave her daughters a piece of her mind after the show, raking them over the coals for not piping up (and perhaps reciting some scripted verbiage she had for them about how wonderful life is as a Gosselin child ) during the interview. But those are just rumors, right?

I never thought I would take Jon Gosselin's side — but he seems to have the kids' best interests at heart. Since their split in 2009, he has pretty much flown under the radar and has said he wants his kids off of reality television. Kate, however, seems bound and determined to keep her kids (and herself) in the limelight. We've seen all types of reality romances crash and burn on television. I don't think it's good for adult relationships and I certainly don't think it's good for children and their relationships. I hope for the Gosselin kids' sake this will be their last time in the spotlight.
