A good old testicle squeeze is just part of the fun if you're a teenage boy, right? Well, whether that is customary among teens or not, parents should know that it can lead to serious health consequences, as it did for one Irish teen.

I'm sure you've heard the adage, "Boys will be boys." Although not always, boys often have a different sense of humor than we moms did as teenagers, so hearing about an Irish teen who suffered a heart attack after his friend "playfully" squeezed his testicles is a little bit outside of our collective personal experiences.

It doesn't just hurt

Everyone knows that getting kicked or punched in the crotch is exquisitely painful for males. But I'm not sure that many of us knew that it could lead to serious health problems. Oh, I know that the testes themselves can be damaged, which is not good at all, but a damaged testicle typically won't kill you.

However, it turns out that if there is enough pain and trauma, you can have a heart attack, and you can even die. Gizmodo investigated the topic after it was reported that a man from China died after his testicles were squeezed, so unfortunately incidents like this are not totally unheard of.

Strange sort of horseplay

The family of the boy in question claims that it was not an attack, but rather the result of horsing around. While police initially thought he was the victim of a crime, further investigation revealed that it was meant to be just a joke.

I think what we can take away from this is that yes, kids goof around, but they need to be warned against grabbing the genitals of their peers, no matter what their sex is.

No matter the intent, the boy is currently in a medically-induced coma, and to his family, it doesn't seem all that funny. The news source doesn't state what his prognosis is, but they did indicate that the family hopes he doesn't have permanent damage.

I think what we can take away from this is that yes, kids goof around, but they need to be warned against grabbing the genitals of their peers, no matter what their sex is. I'm sure it's ha ha funny to some to cause discomfort to a friend, but a frank discussion with your teen can use this case as an example of harmless fun gone wrong.
