Recent ad campaigns are trying to convince women that their bodies are inherently dirty or gross, but we know that bodies are naturally clean and totally awesome. Some women choose to groom while others go natural. Find out why real moms make the choice to shave or wax or decide to leave it natural.

A quick look at the feminine products aisle of any local drugstore reveals products meant to deodorize and clean the vaginal area. Women are given the message that their bodies need to be sanitized. Do these messages influence a woman's grooming habits? We talked to two moms about their personal choices when it comes to going bare or leaving it all there.

Going natural

I feel like my body is more appealing with hair. I feel a deep connection between my body in its natural state and our body's ability to create and sustain life.

Tricia of Boho Mama Soul has never been into grooming her bikini area. After the birth of her first child, she decided to let her leg and armpit hair go natural as well. "I don't like the thought of using a razor with god-knows-what chemicals sitting on its surface," she says. "I don't use deodorant, either. I'd like to minimize the introduction of toxins into my body, and these choices do just that. I also think that a woman's body looks beautiful with hair down there, and everywhere it grows, really. It's reminiscent of the 60's and 70's, the feminist movement, art depicting women with curvy bodies and long, flowing hair. I feel like my body is more appealing with hair. I feel a deep connection between my body in its natural state and our body's ability to create and sustain life."

Going bare

I like the look and feel, and my partner prefers it waxed. I also wax my legs, lip and eyebrows.

Noemi began shaving as a teen on the swim team. When she started developing a rash from shaving her armpits in her mid-20s, she discovered waxing as a less irritating way of removing body hair. "Once I was waxing my pits, my lady region wasn't very far behind," she says. "I started with just bikini waxes, but one day when I called the salon, 'Brazilian' just popped out of my mouth, and I've been getting that done ever since (about 10 years now)." Why does she prefer being bare? "I like the look and feel, and my partner prefers it waxed (her preference is only an added bonus — I'd been waxing for years before we met). I also wax my legs, lip and eyebrows. I haven't owned a razor in years." Noemi finds waxing easier to keep up with than shaving, especially with a little one limiting her free time.

Tips for grooming^

  • If you're not into removing body hair, don't feel like you need to go out of your way to deodorize or sanitize your pubic area. A gentle, fragrance-free soap is easy on your body and can help avoid irritation and itching caused by synthetic perfumes.
  • Interested in something in between bare and natural? Try an electric trimmer for women to keep the hair intact but shorter.
  • When you shave, opt for a fragrance-free, gentle shaving cream and always use a sharp blade. Dry your razor with a soft towel after use to extend its sharpness.
  • Waxing and laser hair removal have an ouch factor, but last longer. Always read reviews online or get a recommendation from a friend before using a new hair removal technician.
