Fighting a bout of the sniffles? Feel better faster with these simple health-boosting remedies you can make at home. With these step-by-step instructions, you'll be feeling better in no time.

When you're dealing with a cold, it can make everything from work to parenting a total hassle. In addition to resting when you can, staying hydrated and following your doctor's advice, try these two at-home remedies that can make your symptoms feel better naturally.

Essential oil steam remedy

Cold remedy- essential oil steam

Love that feeling you get when you're hunkered over a bowl of hot chicken noodle soup? A combination of steam and therapeutic essential oil dials up that effect and helps you soothe and clear your angry sinuses.

  • Hot water in a bowl
  • A clean towel
  • 5 milliliter bottle
  • White Pine (Pinus strobus) essential oil
  • Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) essential oil
  • Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) essential oil

Add 10 drops of each oil to a small, empty 5 milliliter bottle with a dropper or orifice reducer. This bottle will now serve as your therapeutic blend for any time you need to try this steam to clear your sinuses. Heat up water until it's steaming and fill a bowl. Add 1 drop of your oil blend to the bowl. Bend over the bowl and carefully cover yourself with the towel, creating a tent. Breathe evenly for as long as you're comfortable, wiping or blowing your nose as needed. Try this remedy before bed or when you don't have anywhere to be. Hanging out with steam can leave you a little red in the face and may encourage your nose to run.

Hot lemon honey tea

Cold-remedy-Hot lemon honey tea

Treat yourself to a sweet concoction that gives you a dose of vitamin C, the cleansing effects of lemon, the soothing power of honey and the therapeutic warmth of hot tea. Some people swear by a little dash of whiskey, but we're not officially recommending that.

  • Pure honey
  • Fresh lemons
  • Hot herbal tea

This concoction works best with herbal tea, especially if you're trying to get to bed at night. Try a ginger tea or a fruit tea for a nice flavor blend. You can use hot water if you prefer the taste with no additional tea. Slice your lemon and juice the entire fruit. Strain seeds and add the juice to a mug. Add hot water or strong hot tea until the mug is about half full. Pour in 3 tablespoons of honey and stir well. The mixture will be very sour and sweet, like strong lemonade. Purchase enough lemons to drink this hot remedy every day until you're feeling better.
