Spoil your wife or mom on Mother's Day with a beautiful but easy brunch dish. This strawberry and cream French toast is the perfect blend of sweet and savory flavors.

Every mother dreams of a beautiful breakfast on Mother's Day made by her loved ones. This strawberry and cream French toast is so easy that the kids can help with whipping the cream or whisking the French toast custard. Tender challah bread is soaked in an egg and milk mixture that is sprinkled with cinnamon and nutmeg and sweetened with maple syrup.

While it may be tempting to use whipped cream from a container, going the extra step to make the whipped cream will make an enormous difference in the taste. It takes less than 10 minutes, and you will be rewarded with soft peaks of vanilla-flavored whipped cream that practically floats on top of the French toast.

If you really want to impress that special mother in your life, set a tray with a pretty placemat and arrange it with a plate of French toast, a cup of tea or coffee and a small vase with a flower from the garden. It's a perfect breakfast in bed for Mother's Day.

Strawberries & cream French toast

Serves 4 to 6

The whipped cream:

  • 1-1/4 cups whipping cream or heavy cream
  • 1-1/4 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

The French toast:

  • 1 cup 2 percent milk
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 10 to 12 slices challah bread
  • Butter for pan
  • Confectioners' (powdered) sugar
  • 2 cups sliced strawberries

The whipped cream:

  1. Pour the whipping cream and vanilla into the bowl of a stand mixer, fitted with the whisk attachment, or in a large bowl using a hand mixer.
  2. Whip on medium to medium-high speed until the cream forms stiff peaks, about 7 to 8 minutes when using a stand mixer. This may take slightly longer when using a hand mixer.

The French toast:

  1. In a shallow bowl or pie plate, whisk together the milk, eggs, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt.
  2. Working with 2 to 3 pieces of challah bread at a time, soak the bread in the egg mixture until saturated, but not falling apart.
  3. Melt some butter in a skillet (preferably cast-iron) set over medium heat. Cook the soaked bread slices until both sides are golden brown, about 3 minutes per side depending on the thickness of the bread.
  4. Repeat with the remaining bread slices, using more butter to coat the skillet.
  5. Serve with sliced strawberries, a sprinkle of powdered sugar and a dollop of whipped cream.

note^ If you wish to serve all of the French toast at once, keep the cooked slices warm on a baking sheet set in a 200 degree F oven.
